FROM NORTH SOMERSET COUNCIL LIBERAL DEMOCRAT GROUP

Liberal Democrat Councillors on North Somerset Council have obtained figures which show that the Conservative Councillors currently running North Somerset are preparing to spend £17 million on Castlewood and £10 million on plans to refurbish office accommodation in the Town Hall. The plans for the Town Hall in Weston include the closure of the main Library in Weston and moving it into the Town Hall.

Liberal Democrat Deputy Group Leader and South Worle Councillor Edward Keating said “It is shocking that the ruling Tories are proposing spending so much of taxpayer’s money on office accommodation in Weston after only purchasing a huge office block in Clevedon recently.”

North Somerset Council recently purchased Castlewood in Clevedon at a cost to taxpayers of £17 million.  The Lib Dems believe instead of moving many jobs out of the Weston-super-Mare area to Clevedon the council should be doing all it can to attract more employment to Weston.

South Worle Councillor and Liberal Democrat Finance Spokesperson Chris Howell said “This is an outrage at a time when jobs are being lost and services are being cut. Local Conservative councillors are clearly out of touch with the current economic crisis affecting the local community. They also seem happy to make Weston worse off by moving jobs out of the town despite claiming every four years they will bring prosperity to the town.”
